The Alabama Judiciary
Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. The state Supreme Court is located in the Judicial Building in the capital city. This same government building also houses the appellate courts as well as the State Law Library, and Administrative Office of Courts.
The appellate courts are divided into Court of Civil Appeals and Court of Criminal Appeals.
The Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction. District Courts have jurisdiction on civil suits up to $10,000. Small Claims Courts is a division of a District Court for lawsuits up to $3,000 maximum.
There is no state Public Defender office in Alabama. Defense attorneys are appointed by judges when necessary to provide legal counsel for indigent clients.
